Tsunami Fundraising Ball

Saturday 5th February

At The Lion Inn, Trellech

At 8:00am on Boxing Day I sat watching Sky News, with morbid fascination, amazed that an earthquake had set off a Tsunami, and that reports were saying 550 people were dead. I will remember that number for a long time. But by the time the family were awake and breakfasted, the numbers of dead were already rising over 1,000. Today, 12th January, as I write this site the reported number of dead is over 156,000.

The reason for this fundraising ball is, of course, to raise money for those in need, but also to have fun whilst doing it. Many people had already donated money to "THE POT", but it was intention to donate the raised funds to a specific village and cause. I contacted the DEC but they were unable to specify where the money would have been spent.

  Regaining The Smile

Being an ex-member of Round Table, I contacted the President of Round Table Sri Lanka directly and after an exchange of e-mails decided to send our raised funds to them. Children are always the ones who suffer most, therefore funds will be used in the "REGAINING THE SMILE" project, with our funds being directed to one particular school rebuilding project. Details below

"Hegalle Maha Vidyalaya, Hegalle, Ambalangoda Zone, Galle District.
Approximately 80 kms South of Colombo.
Destroyed by Tsunami Wave
Currently : 1,133 Students
Primary, Secondary and Collegiate education
Proposed : 1,500 Students New School Buildings to be constructed on the rear open land available.
Government Estimate for Total Reconstruction Sri Lankan Rs 90 Million (Aprrox. US$900,000 / Euro 666,000)"

As as 15th February not all the auction money has come in, nor all the bills been paid. However, I hope to be able to send in the region of £7,000.00, or 1,300,000.00 Sri Lanka Rupees or almost 1½ % of the total school rebuilding cost.

The Evenings Events

The evening started around 7:15 with pre drinks in the marquee bar accompanied by the highly talented Charlotte "Charlie" Poulter on Harp. Deb finally managed to get everyone, all 136, seated for dinner at 8.20 !! Grace was said by Dave Guppy and everyone tucked into dinner. During dinner Rob & Rosie Morris entertained with Welsh Folk songs, and the audience was hushed as Rosie sang a very moving Indonesian Folk Song. Following dinner Peter Ayling started off the auction. Bidding started slowly.... but Peter roused the crowd.... and everyone dug deep into their pockets. The highlights of the auction included raising £525.00 for a rare bottle of Cockburns 1944 Port, £1100.00 for a riding lesson with Olympic Equestrian Debbie Johnsey and £220.00 to see Peter Dunckley's garage !! Much merriment and dancing then continued to the sounds of Ron Rogers and Ian Luther till the early hours. Full Gallery of pictures will be online later this week
